What is CNC Plasma Cutting Machine

Today we talk about CNC Plasma cutting machine, CNC Plasma Cutting refers to the cutting of metals using a computer controlled plasma torch. Plasma cutters work by forcing gas or compressed air through a nozzle at high speed. Once an electric arc is introduced into the gas, ionized gas or plasma is formed, the fourth state of matter. This, in turn, cuts through the metal.

CNC plasma cutters vary widely in price, size and functionalities. Machines that cut metals at speeds up to 500 inches per minute are highly accurate and fast-cutting. Plasma cutting machine give a quality work and Plasma cutters require plasma gas and an auxiliary gas to function, and they vary and different according to the material to be cut.

When it comes to machines, the most and very important considerations are space and safety and some other thing. Unlike many hobby CNC systems, plasma cutters take up a large amount of space and require a very well ventilated area to be safely controlled and operated.

The machine needs an area around it as a buffer for any kind of spark. Similarly, the floor should be of concrete or other flame resistant material.

The Computer systems require gas or compressor as well as space. To prevent the plasma arc from interfering with the computer, the machine must be grounded, and the computer must be on an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) to ensure continuous reliable power.

If you plan to install your own CNC plasma cutter, make sure your shop’s power source is adequate (per specifications). Plans for the DIY CNC Plasma Table can be found on Intractable.

With regard to ventilation, there are two main different types of plasma tables are water and downdraft tables

Different types of gases are used in plasma cutting depending on the quality of the cut and the type of material:-

Downdraft tables have built-in ventilation, which is designed to remove smoke and debris from the metal being worked on. Most often, the working surface has holes through which particles are sucked in. In this case, it is necessary to attach the turbine style of the exhaust system to the plenum in the centre of the table.

If we talk about water table then water table allows the working part as well as the plasma torch to quickly submerge and regenerate, carrying away debris and keeping the parts cool. In this case, normal workshop ventilation should be sufficient.

There are many types of gases are used in plasma cutting depending on the quality of the cut and the type of material:-

An Argon and hydrogen mixture is preferred for smooth cuts in stainless steel and aluminium, as it gives a higher An argon and hydrogen mixture is preferred for smooth cuts in stainless steel and aluminium, as it gives a higher quality cut.

Oxygen is used to mild steel up to 1 1/4 inches thick but produces a rough looking cut on stainless steel and aluminium.

In a small shop, compressed air is the most common gas used as both a plasma gas and an auxiliary gas. This is works well for applications cutting low current in metals up to an inch thick.

Talk about other gases utilized in CNC plasma cutting are methane and nitrogen, which are often used when cutting thin stainless-steel.
